# Shopify UCP discovery

> How Conto uses Shopify’s Universal Commerce Protocol catalog alongside web search to find products.

Conto's shopping chat uses Shopify's Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) catalog for product discovery. Global catalog searches are enabled and have been verified through the live customer chat. UCP discovery is one source of product candidates alongside broader web search.

## How search works

For an open product search, Conto runs web search alongside Shopify catalog discovery and combines their results. Shopify candidates are placed first before downstream screening, so a short result list can contain only Shopify stores even though web search also ran. Non-Shopify stores remain eligible through web search.

When the shopper names a store, Conto tries its advertised compatible UCP catalog. If UCP is unsupported, unavailable, or provides no usable candidates, Conto continues through its existing store-search paths. Availability varies by store and request; this is not a guarantee that every Shopify store can be searched through UCP.

Before showing cards, Conto checks candidates for relevance, the buyer's constraints, price, and variant availability. Catalog information can change. Shipping, tax, and the final payable total still need confirmation during checkout.

## Current scope

| Capability | Conto's current integration |
| - | - |
| Shopify Global Catalog product discovery | Enabled and verified in customer chat |
| Individual store catalog discovery | Attempted when a compatible capability is advertised; existing search remains available |
| Non-Shopify product discovery | Continues through web search |
| UCP checkout and payment completion | Not enabled in this integration |

Selecting a discovered product continues through Conto's existing supported purchase and checkout flows. Enabling UCP discovery does not enable UCP checkout, grant spending authority, or make an unsupported store purchasable.

## For personal-agent developers

To have Conto execute a purchase, use the [Conto Commerce quickstart](/docs/guides/commerce-quickstart) and [Purchases API](/docs/sdk/purchases) with a product URL and task. The API does not expose the shopping chat's UCP search as a separate public search endpoint. Conto manages its own Shopify catalog connection; you do not supply Shopify credentials to start a Conto purchase.

If your agent manages product discovery itself, Shopify's [Global Catalog documentation](https://shopify.dev/docs/agents/catalog/global-catalog) describes direct UCP integration. Use [connected cards](/docs/guides/connected-cards) or [checkout checkpoints](/docs/guides/checkout-checkpoints) for the supported payment path your agent operates. Product discovery and payment authorization remain separate steps.

See [Agentic commerce](/docs/guides/agentic-commerce) to choose an integration for your shopping agent.
